What this guide covers

This guide explains what "login" means for Ledger® Live, how Ledger keeps your keys secure, step-by-step setup and connection, receiving & sending crypto, managing apps and accounts, security best practices, and how to troubleshoot common issues. It’s written for users new to hardware wallets and for those switching from custodial platforms.

Understanding the Ledger® security model

Ledger® hardware wallets hold your private keys offline. Ledger® Live is the companion application (desktop & mobile) that provides a secure UI to view balances, prepare transactions, and request signatures from your hardware device. There is no centralized account that stores your funds — the Ledger device + recovery phrase are the keys to access your crypto.

Ledger® Live will never request your 24-word recovery phrase. Anyone asking for it is a scam.

Quick checklist (what you need)

Step 1 — Download & verify Ledger® Live

  1. Go to the official Ledger® website and download Ledger® Live for your platform. Verify the URL and file integrity if available.
  2. Install and launch the app. Choose Get started and follow the on-screen prompts.

Trust only official downloads to avoid malware that could tamper with addresses displayed on your computer.

Step 2 — Initialize or restore your Ledger® device

  1. For a new device: choose Set up as new device, create a PIN, and write down the recovery phrase exactly as shown.
  2. For restoring: choose Restore device and enter your existing recovery phrase using the device controls.

Never store your recovery phrase digitally. Consider a metal backup for long-term durability.

Step 3 — Connect Ledger® Live and add accounts

  1. Open Ledger® Live > choose your device model > follow prompts to connect and unlock the device.
  2. Go to Manager, allow Ledger® Live to manage the device, and install blockchain apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.).
  3. Navigate to Accounts > Add account and follow the prompts to add one or more accounts. Ledger® Live will scan the blockchain for addresses tied to your device.

Installing/uninstalling device apps does not affect funds — uninstalling an app only frees device storage. Accounts are derived from your recovery phrase and remain recoverable.

Receiving crypto — verify on-device

  1. In Ledger® Live, select Receive and choose the account.
  2. Connect and unlock your Ledger® device, open the corresponding app, and let Ledger® Live show the address.
  3. Verify that the address shown in Ledger® Live matches the address on your device screen before sharing it.

Only trust the address shown on your physical device. Malware on your PC can alter addresses shown in apps but cannot change the address displayed on the hardware device.

Sending crypto — sign on-device

  1. Click Send, select the account, and enter the destination address and amount.
  2. Connect your Ledger® device, open the right app, and review the transaction information displayed on the device.
  3. Confirm on the device to sign the transaction — private keys never leave the device.

For contract interactions or DeFi, double-check contract addresses, allowances, and gas fees. Use well-known, audited interfaces and scrutinize on-device confirmations when available.

Advanced: passphrase, multiple accounts, tokens & NFTs

Ledger® supports an optional passphrase feature that creates additional hidden wallets. This increases security but is risky if you forget the passphrase. Ledger® Live supports multiple accounts per blockchain and can display many tokens and some NFTs; for complex NFT interactions, consider connecting Ledger® to a compatible Web3 interface while always approving actions on-device.

Security best practices

Scammers often impersonate support and ask for your recovery phrase. Real support will never ask for it.

Troubleshooting common issues

  1. Device not detected: Try a different USB cable/port, enable Bluetooth on Nano X, unlock the device, and restart Ledger® Live.
  2. App installation errors: Free up space by uninstalling unused apps in Manager, then reinstall the needed app.
  3. Slow or stuck transactions: Check network fees. For advanced users, use replace-by-fee or nonce tools if supported.
  4. Lost recovery phrase: If you still have access to the device, create a new wallet, transfer funds out, and store the new recovery phrase safely.
